How to create outdoor shade

25 Jul 2024
by Martine

Summer in Valencia is getting hotter every year, and it's not just here, but the whole of Spain is feeling the heat. That's why creating some shade is a must.

Valencia recently won the award for the greenest city in 2024, thanks in large part to its many green spaces and tree cover providing shade (must needed here).

So that why we writing a blog for some great tips to help you create your own cool haven in your garden, patio, or balcony.

1. Pergolas

Pergolas are structures with a roof formed by beams and rafters. They offer partial shade and can be adorned with climbing plants like wisteria or grapevines to increase shade over time.
And one of my personal favorites due to the colour: Bougainvillea. You see them a lot here in Spain, and they not only provide shade, also a good colour palet!

2. Shade sails

Shade sails are versatile and stylish. They are made from durable fabric and can be installed in various configurations to block the sun effectively. They are available in many colors and sizes.

3. Trees

Planting trees and shrubs is a natural and eco-friendly way to create shade. Trees like maple, oak, and birch provide ample shade and upgrade your garden's aesthetic. In Spain the use of palmtrees is also very popular. But because of it's hight, it's more for esthetics then for the shade.
Flowering shrubs like hydrangeas also add beauty and partial shade.

4. Garden umbrellas

Garden umbrellas are a quick and flexible solution. They come in various sizes and designs, making them easy to move around and adjust as needed. Some umbrellas even have tilting features to follow the sun.

5. Gazebos

Gazebos provide a sheltered area perfect for relaxing or dining outdoors. They can be freestanding or attached to a building and are available in various designs from traditional to modern.
We also love adding the earlier tip here for some extra touch: bougainvillea.

6. Arbors

Arbors are similar to pergolas but are usually smaller and often used as entryways or focal points in gardens. They can support climbing plants, creating a shaded passage or nook.

So, whether you're looking to create shade with some greenery or a stylish sail, the choice is yours! From natural options like trees to structures such as pergolas and awnings, there are plenty of ways to match your style and needs. Enjoy your outdoor space all summer long!

With a sunny greet,
