Why September and October are the Best Months to Visit Valencia
Valencia is a year-round destination, but the months of September and October offer an exceptional experience.
Many tourist come in August, but those are actually the ghost months in Valencia. Let me explain why the other months are the best time to visit our city.
1. Perfect weather
In July and August, Valencia experiences very high temperatures, often reaching 40°C , making it uncomfortable for sightseeing. However, in September and October, the heat softens, with pleasant averages between 25-30°C. This makes exploring the city’s streets, relaxing on the beach, or enjoying outdoor terraces much more enjoyable. Cooler evenings in October are perfect for dining outdoors or taking long walks along the coast.
2. Valencia comes back to life
August is the traditional vacation month in Spain, meaning many locals leave the city, and several businesses close for a summer break. They even have a saying: "if you die in August, you will be buried in September". It really is a ghost city then, as every local leaves the city and closes their shop.
Come September, the city reawakens with fresh energy. Local markets fill with seasonal produce, restaurants reopen, and cultural activities resume. Whether it’s concerts, exhibitions, or street festivals, the city buzzes with life again, offering a more authentic experience.
3. Fewer tourists, more tranquility
While summer sees a surge of tourists, September and October offer a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere. With fewer crowds, it’s easier to explore Valencia’s iconic sites, such as the City of Arts and Sciences, or stroll through the beautiful Turia Gardens. You’ll enjoy shorter lines at museums and find the beaches less crowded, making for a peaceful escape while still benefiting from warm, sunny days.
4. Beach days without the heat
Even though summer is technically over, the Mediterranean Sea stays warm well into October, perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply sunbathing on Valencia’s stunning beaches, such as Malvarrosa and Patacona. The cooler temperatures and gentle sea breeze make beach-going in early autumn a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
5. Seasonal delights and local festivals
September and October are a foodie’s dream in Valencia. Markets brim with seasonal products like mushrooms, figs, and pumpkins, offering a taste of autumn. These months are ideal for trying traditional dishes like arroz al horno (oven-baked rice) or pisto.
Valencia also celebrates its regional culture during this time, with events like Día de la Comunidad Valenciana on October 9th. The city comes alive with parades, fireworks, and local festivities, offering visitors a unique insight into Valencia’s rich heritage.
6. Golden sunsets and outdoor Living
As autumn sets in, Valencia enjoys stunning golden sunsets, with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. The outdoor lifestyle remains strong, with locals continuing to enjoy cafés, parks, and outdoor terraces. Whether it’s a picnic in the Turia Gardens or a cocktail with a view, Valencia’s autumn charm is undeniable.
So, it's totally up to you, but as residents of Valencia, we prefer these months over July & august.
Enjoy the rest of the remaining summer, and hopefully see you soon in Valencia, in your preferred month!
With love,
