DIY: concrete look

Creating a stunning concrete-look wall or surface is a trending DIY project that can really change spaces like bathrooms or living areas. While professionally-done concrete finishes can be expensive, there are more affordable options available for those looking to achieve a similar aesthetic on a budget.
I've tested both the painting method (option 1) and the micro cement premix (option 2) in my own home. Here are practical insights and alternatives to help you achieve the desired aesthetic yourself:

  1. Concrete Paint: One of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to achieve a concrete look is by using faux concrete paint. This type of paint is specially formulated to mimic the appearance of concrete when applied to walls, floors, or furniture.
You can also use normal paint. I painted my wall with regular paint, then layered a mix of the same paint with white for texture using a roller. After 3 hours of drying, I achieved this realistic concrete effect.

This is a handy video to help you out!

  2. Concrete Overlays: Another option is to use concrete overlays, which are thin layers of concrete that can be applied over existing surfaces like countertops, floors, or walls. These overlays are relatively easy to apply and can be customized with different textures and finishes to achieve the desired look. They are also more affordable than traditional concrete installations and can be DIY-friendly with the right tools and techniques.
I tried this on a home made cabinet for a finish in white. See below:

  3. DIY Concrete Mix: For those who are more adventurous and have some DIY experience, mixing your own concrete can be a cost-effective option. There are numerous tutorials available online that provide step-by-step instructions on how to mix and apply concrete to achieve a smooth, polished finish. Keep in mind that working with concrete requires proper preparation and safety precautions, so be sure to do your research beforehand.

  4. Concrete Wallpaper: If you're not ready to commit to a permanent concrete finish, consider using concrete wallpaper instead. This innovative product features realistic concrete textures and can be easily applied and removed without damaging the underlying surface. It's a great option for renters or those who want to experiment with the concrete look before committing to a more permanent solution.
But, I have to say, this one is the least favorite, as you will see that it's wallpaper and not real concrete.

Tip: Once you've achieved the desired concrete look, be sure to apply a sealant or finish to protect the surface and enhance its durability. There are various sealants available specifically designed for concrete surfaces, including options that provide a glossy or matte finish depending on your preference!

By trying these options and techniques, you can easily create a stunning concrete-look wall, floor, or surface without breaking the bank. Whether you go for (concrete) paint, overlays, DIY concrete mixing, concrete wallpaper, or a combination of these methods, the result will be a stylish space!

Good luck!

With love,
